چکیده

The Web currently suffers from a number of scalability problems. While general caching techniques can be used to help some, the vast number of different resources now available requires an alternative approach. In particular, we need to develop resourcespecific strategies. Such an approach is not supported in the current Web infrastructure. Also, the current Web is limited in flexibility with regards to integration of new resources and services. This is partly caused by the rigid nature of the HTTP protocol. We introduce Web objects as a way to address these problems. Web objects are worldwide scalable distributed shared objects that represent Web resources. Each such object provides at least a common interface and encapsulates and implements its own distribution policy. In this paper we concentrate on the design of these Web objects as well as their implementation in Java.

Raven: Extending HTML for Peer-to-peer Synchronous Applications

The Raven architecture provides object replication for any object system that implements object properties and methods. In the current Windows Internet Explorer implementation, it is particularly tightly integrated with HTML, allowing simple, rapid development of multi-user applications in a web page. Raven uses an XML schema approach to describing the objects to be shared among clients. The XM...

A token-based independent update protocol for managing replicated objects

Replication is the key to providing high availability, fault tolerance, and enhanced performance in a computing system [17, 39]. Existing strategies used for managing replicated objects can be divided into two levels. At the system level, many strategies use multicast group communication systems to provide a run-time system support or toolkit for simplifying the design and implementation of rel...

Design and Scalability of NLS, a Scalable Naming and Location Service

This paper sketches the design, and presents a scalability analysis and evaluation of NLS, a scalable naming and location service. NLS resolves textual names to the nearest of a set of replicated objects associated with that name, and is designed to scale to the dimensions of a world-wide service. Applications include resolving Web URIs to the nearest cached or replicated object that provides t...

A Lightweight Fault Tolerance Framework for Web Services 1

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a lightweight fault tolerance framework for Web services. With our framework, a Web service can be rendered fault tolerant by replicating it across several nodes. A consensus-based algorithm is used to ensure total ordering of incoming application requests to the replicated Web service, and to ensure consistent membership view among the...

Design and Implementation of a User-Centered Content Distribution Network

Replicating Web documents at a worldwide scale can help reduce user-perceived latency and wide-area network traffic. This paper presents the design and implementation of Globule, a platform that allows Web server administrators to organize a decentralized replication service by trading Web hosting resources with each other. Globule automates all aspects of such replication: document replication...
